THE
STORY
(Thanks
to Per !!!)
Jacques
Fred Petrus was studying music at the conservatory in Bologna, Italy.
Her he met Mauro Malavasi. Both were into music and started to produce
music, with groups like Macho, Revanche and Peter Jacques Band. They
put together session musicians and recorded music for the 1st
Change album; The Glow Of Love. Then they took the recorded music
and went to New York, to look for singers. Here they teamed up with
Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Shaw (now Jocelyn Brown).
After
shopping around for a deal, they signed with RFC Records, who then
released the album The Glow Of Love. The 1st single A Lover's Holiday
was a big hit. Follow up singles Searching and The Glow Of Love also
topped the charts in the Summer of 1980. In late 1980 they were back
in Italy to record the follow-up album. Again, they took the recorded
music to New York (Media Sound Studios) and lay down the vocals. This
time they recruited a new lead singer; James "Crabs" Robinson.
Luther had just signed a solo contract with Epic Records so he didn't
have time. But he is featured as a background singer on the Miracles
album though. 1st single was Paradise followed by Hold Tight and Miracles.
The album did very well in the charts.
For the 3rd album, Petrus and Malavasi decided to record the whole
album in New York, at the Media Sound Studios. This time a "real"
group had emerged, so the cover of this album is a photo of all the
members (Deborah Cooper, Timmy Allen, Jeff Bova, Rick Galwey, James
Robinson, Mike Campbell and Vincent Henry). The 1st single release
was The Very Best In You followed by Hard Times (It's Gonna Be Alright).
You're My Girl was also released as a single as I recall. Mind you,
this is 17 years ago!!!!
In late 1982, Petrus and Malavasi headed back to Italy, to Modena
to record the 4th album. The vocals were recorded at Sorcerer Sound
Studios. In early 1983 the 1st single release was the wonderful track
This Is Your Time, followed by Don't Wait Another Night, Magical Night
and Got To Get Up.
In september of 1983 Petrus called up Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to
work on the next album. They were fresh from success with Cheryl Lynn's
Encore and S.O.S. Band's Just Be Good To Me. The music was recorded
in Modena once again, with Jimmy and Terry. All the vocals were recorded
at their own studio, Creation Audio, Minneapolis, USA. The 1st single
was the title track Change Of Heart. Followed by You Are My Melody.
The 3rd single was (I think) It Burns Me Up.
For their last album Turn On Your Radio, Petrus was no longer with
Malavasi, and that's why he enlisted Timmy Allen as co-producer for
the album. The funny thing about this album, is that their American
record label Atlantic didn't think that it was a strong enough album,
so it was decided that they should release it in Europe first. It
came out in England in April 1985, but with a different cover and
with the title Turn On The Radio! 1st single was Let's Go Together
followed by Oh What A Feeling. 3rd single release was Mutual Attraction.
The album did very poor both on the charts and sales-wise and they
were later dropped from the label. A real shame I must say. James
Robinson released a solo album on Tabu Records in 1987 entitled Guilty.
Mike Campbell and Jeff Bova worked as session musicians and were very
indemand. Deborah Cooper later (in 1990) sang with C & C Music
Factory on the track Pride (A Deeper Love). Don't know what she's
doing these days. Mike Campbell has been on tour with Luther several
times. Jacques Fred Petrus was murdered in 1988.
